25/5/19: Reuters  - Sudan military chief visits Egypt, first trip since Bashir’s ouster

The head of Sudan’s ruling military council, Abdulfattah Al Burhan, visited neighbouring Egypt on Saturday - his first trip abroad since the army overthrew former president Omar Al Bashir last month.

The meeting was closely watched by Sudan’s opposition and protest groups, who have warned Egypt not to interfere in their politics. They did not make an immediate comment.

Sisi and Al Burhan “agreed on the priority of supporting the free will of the Sudanese people and its choices,” Egyptian presidency spokesman Bassam Rady said.

Sisi also said Egypt was ready to “provide all means of support to the brothers in Sudan to overcome this stage in line with the aspirations of the Sudanese people, away from external interventions,” according to Rady.

25/5/19: Guardian – Sudan, Algeria, Libya: new Arab spring stalls as Trump looks away, by Simon Tisdall

Foreign affairs commentator Simon Tisdall argues that Sudanese hopes of “root-and-branch reform” following Omar Al Bashir’s ouster, are fading amid army machinations and American and European indifference.

Tisdall highlights the US disengagement and strained relations with Sudanese democrats to argue that the US has handed over the initiative on Sudan’s future to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt.

TIsdall states that this “this ultra-conservative, nationalist Arab axis” is supportive of general Himedti, who “claims he is not seeking power but his ambition is obvious.”
