SUDAN NEWS ALERT: Sudan Tribune - Hamdok calls to integrate more groups into Sudan’s ruling coalition

2/8/2021: Sudan Tribune - Hamdok calls to integrate more groups into Sudan’s ruling coalition

Sudan Tribune report that Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok’s called upon the leaders of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) coalition to exert more effort to integrate holdout groups into the ruling coalition.

The holdout factions reportedly told Hamdok that they were ready to rejoin the historical FFC but requested a delay of the appointment of governors and the formation of the legislative council and to prioritise reforming the coalition’s structures.

Sudan Tribune note that the Sudanese Communist Party, which is opposed to the economic reforms implemented by the transitional government, rejected calls to rejoin the reunited FFC.

Divisions within the FFC factions hampered the formation of the legislative council and delayed reforms to be enforced by the transitional government. Also, they contributed, among others, to weaken Hamdok’s government which rule the country in partnership with the military component, Sudan Tribune add.

2/8/2020: al-Initibaha - Why insist on appointing Saleh Ammar?, by al-Sheikh Saleh

In the pro-Islamist al-Intibaha newspaper, columnist al-Sheikh Saleh calls for prospective Kassala governor Saleh Ammar to “clear the way for the appointment of another person in his position”.

The author argues that Ammar’s resignation will lift the embarrassment of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok “who found himself in this great dilemma because he did not read the reality closely,” criticising Ammar’s nomination as governor on the grounds of his military background in light of Kassala’s “suffering from many security threats, such as smuggling problems, lack of resources, and tribal wars.”

As well as suggesting that Ammar “lacks practical experience,” the  author also argues that Ammar does not have local acceptance, citing protests against him in neighbouring states of the Red Sea and Gadarif.

A large number of the Zaghawa of Darfur region have settled in New Halfa where they work as farmers.

Salah accused the authorities of being slow to deal with the events, with locals reportedly filing several cases in the past without concrete measures being taken.
