 Radio Dabanga report that over 3,000 people have fled their villages east of Jebel Marra after gunmen attacked villages in the area. The attackers are still roaming the area.

Spokesperson for the Darfur Displaced and Refugees General Coordination Adam Rujal reported that four villages were raided on January 24 and 25. “Eight people were killed on the first day, and three on the second day. Dozens of others were injured and went missing,” he stated.

Activist Hasan Adam told Radio Dabanga that the gunmen were still roaming the area. “They control all roads, which led to the displacement of more villagers, and ensures that a number of the wounded in the attack were unable to reach clinics or hospitals in the surrounding areas.

Adam called on the UN and the international community to intervene and protect the newly displaced.

Sudan Tribune reports that Donald Booth, the US Special Envoy for Sudan has discussed Sudan’s economic situation with the Sudanese ministers for Finance and mining – Ibrahim el-Badawi and Adel Ali Ibrahim respectively.

El-Badawi reportedly discussed with Booth the economic reforms and financial structural imbalances that the 2020 budget plans to address. El-Badawi also called on Booth to back efforts to remove obstacles preventing bank transfers between the US and Sudan.  

Adel Ali Ibrahim reportedly informed Booth of the reforms achieved in the energy and mining sector, as it attempts to eradicate fraud and corruption. He also reviewed investment opportunities in the sectors.

27/1/2020: Sudan Tribune - SPLM-N al-Hilu says not concerned by govt-Agar deal

Sudan Tribune reports that the SPLM-N faction of Abdel Aziz el-Hilu said its “not concerned” with peace framework agreement on South Kordofan and the Blue Nile states, signed by the government and the SPLM-N faction of  Malik Agar.

Talks between the government and SPLM-N al-Hilu remain deadlocked over the faction’s demands for a secular state. The government says the issue should be left to a constitutional conference the SPLM-N  al-Hilu fation says it has to be settled at the peace negotiating table.

The spokesman for the government negotiation team Mohamed al-Taishi said that the government made five proposals to the al-Hilu group on the matter, but a consensus was not reached.

27/1/2020: Sudan Tribune - Sudan, UNAMID reactivate joint security mechanism in Darfur

Sudan Tribune reports that the Sudanese government and the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has agreed to reactivate a joint security mechanism to allow speedy security-related consultations and decisions

The agreement follows repeated looting incidents of UN assets in West, South and more recently, North Darfur.

To this end, the UNAMID head held a series of meeting with Sudan Minister of Defence and with the Assistant Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 16 January and 24 January 2020, respectively.

The joint mechanism includes UNAMID, UN Country Team, Sudan Ministry of Defence and other relevant Sudanese authorities such as the foreign ministry, the interior ministry and the intelligence service.
