 In a press release on rising violence in Port Sudan, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok responded with a letter explaining that he had met with tribal leaders and politicians and decided to: Send a team from the Central Reserve Forces (CRF) to Port Sudan; create a quad committee from the council of security and defense to investigate; request that Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC) participate in making a proposal to solve the conflict, and support the strict curfew implemented by the state governor to help quell the violence.

AP’s report on deadly tribal clashes in Port Sudan provides contextual background on the conflict between the Beni Amer and Nuba tribes.

 The tensions between the two tribes date back to May 2019 in the eastern city of Qadarif, mainly over water and other resources. The clashes flared up in August 2019 in Port Sudan, when at least three dozen people from both sides were killed. They also clashed in January 2020 in the Port Sudan, when nine people were killed.

 Radio Dabanga reports that leaders of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF, a coalition of armed movements) arrived in Cairo to discuss the contents of the Constitutional Declaration with the Forces for Freedom and Change opposition alliance (FFC) before the final signing takes place on August 17.

 As well as rejecting the political charter of the power-sharing transitional deal, the SRF rejected the constitutional declaration because it ignored with the Addis Ababa Agreement – a deal agreed between the SRF and the FFC to prioritise peace in Sudan during the transitional period.
