SUDAN INSIGHT ALERT: Radio Dabanga - Darfur expert: Sudan peace accord ‘a symbolic victory’

15/9/2020: Radio Dabanga - Darfur expert: Sudan peace accord ‘a symbolic victory’

Speaking to Radio Dabanga, Ahmed Adam, a Darfuri specialist in international law and conflict resolution, highlights various risks in the Juba peace agreement: ”the most important of which are the absence of regional and international guarantees and the lack of donors and financiers,” alongside the continuing insecurity in Darfur and that two main rebel groups have not signed the agreement.

Adam warned that “new wars may erupt in the event the implementation of the peace accord fails due to the absence of funds.”

He also suspects that stipulations in the peace agreement concerning the restructuring of the military may not be implemented as “peace is not a priority for certain parties in the government.”

Adam says the implementation of the peace agreement depends upon “the political will of the signatories,” further warning of “dire [if] any crack occurs in the Sudan Revolutionary Front.”

15/9/19: AFP - ‘Suspect funds used to send military gear to Sudan neighbours’

AFP reports that a witness in Omar Al Bashir’s trial backed up Al Bashir’s claim that the foreign funds found in his home were part of Sudan’s strategic relations with Saudi Arabia and were used as donations rather than private interests.

Defence witness Sadiq Yakub, who represents a manufacturing unit owned by the Sudanese army, said that his army owned firm supplied military equipment to neighbouring countries using funds that Al Bashir alleged to have received illegally.
