Sudan Tribune report that Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese army, stated that the integration of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) into the army is the main reason for the army’s support of the framework agreement.

He stressed that the army would not accept the political framework agreement if this clause is not implemented.

Al-Burhan statements come after reports about the army’s frustration with the RSF’s commercial and mining activities and close cooperation with the Russian Wagner contractors deployed in the Central African Republic (CAR).

SUDAN INSIGHT ALERT: al-Democrati – National Reconciliation is a “pleasure marriage”,

16/2/2021: al-Democrati – National Reconciliation is a “pleasure marriage”, by Haider Ibrahim Ali

In a criticism of calls from Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) leaders for a ‘National Reconciliation’ with Islamists of Omar al-Bashir’s ousted regime, writer Haider Ibrahim Ali argues that the exclusion of Islamists is a “call for justice” that “provides lessons to deter a repeat of [al-Bashir’s 1989 coup].”

Ali argues that the Islamists did not believe in nationalism when they were in power, citing the Sudanese citizenship granted to Tunisian Islamist Rached Ghannouchi, whereas this “right was denied to some honourable Sudanese who were rendered homeless around the globe”, and Sudanese youth were “deprived from the bounties of their country which were readily given to the members of terrorist groups.”

Ali accused SRF rebel leaders Minni Minnawi and Jibril Ibrahim of seeking the empower the remnants of the ousted regime via “a secret illegal marriage,” adding that their hearts are with al-Bashir’s regime.

In a televised interview with Sudan 24, the deputy chairman of Sudan’s sovereign council, Himedti, complained of marginalisation by the civilian government, and called for a code of conduct to build confidence with the Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC).

Himedti, the Rapid Support Forces commander, denied efforts to obstruct the civilian-led government. He added that “we are confused about what do. We can help, provide services and take advantage of our relationships, but they do not allow us.”

Himedti said his relations with the UAE and Saudi Arabia can help solve Sudan’s economic crisis, but complained that “some people kept insulting [Saudi Arabia and the UAE],” who he said “are the only countries that supported Sudan.”

Himedti called for a “code of conduct in which [the sovereign council, cabinet, FFC, the youth and all supporters of change] pledge - to work for the interest of [Sudan].”
