SUDAN NEWS ALERT: Bloomberg - Government Split Poses New Threat to Sudan Democratic Transition

11/10/2021: Bloomberg - Government Split Poses New Threat to Sudan Democratic Transition, by  Mohammed Alamin and Simon Marks

Bloomberg report that Sudan’s democratic transition faced a new threat as the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) and other former rebel groups split with their one-time civilian allies of the Forces of Freedom and Change, an activist coalition that led anti-Bashir protests and later selected civilian members for the transitional government, and called for a new government.

Bloomberg state that the step “removes a key pillar of support from embattled civilians in the interim government who are increasingly at odds with the military officials they share power with,” a feud that “risks derailing Sudan’s path to democracy”

SRF deputy chairman al-Tom Hajo said that rebel leaders including finance minister Jibril Ibrahim call for the government to be dissolved and replaced by “real technocrats”.

Hajo rejects allegations from civilian FFC members that the rebels’ decision was instigated by the military in an attempt to discredit the government and sow chaos.

The Sudanese government has filed a lawsuit against Abdulhay Yousif, after his attack on female sports minister Walaa Al-Boushi, saying that his statements are an attack on the policy to restore the role of and status of women in society.

Abdulhay Yousif attacked Al-Boushi over the inception of Sudan’s first women’s football league.

Faisal Mohamed Saleh, Minister of Information, said “the cabinet directed the Ministry of Justice to take the necessary legal measures to demonstrate its solidarity (with the minister) because it is a public issue and not a personal matter."

Omar al-Bashir’s National Congress Party has launched a campaign in support of Abdulhay Yousif.
