3/4/2020: Radio Dabanga - Coronavirus in Sudan: Govt opts for possibility of a gradual lockdown

Radio Dabanga reports that following consultations with Sudan’s Higher Committee for Health Emergencies, the Sudanese cabinet decided to adopt a step-by-step approach to an entire lockdown to combat the spread of the coronavirus, with additional measures required to compensate for the loss of income.

Sudan’s Information Minister, Faisal Mohammed Salih, said that a complete lockdown will require specific measures for those who depend on daily work, and that the government should “compensate their loss of income in case of a complete lockdown.”

Salih confirmed that that the Cabinet discussed the possibility of food distribution channels via cooperative societies, or through distribution centres selling basic commodities for reduced prices for the many people working in the informal sector.
