18/5/2021: Multiple sources – Sudan fires top judge, accepts prosecutors’ resignation

Sudan’s ruling sovereign council dismissed the Chief Justice, Niemat Mohamed Abdallah, and accepted the resignation of Attorney General Tajelsir al-Hibr.

Al-Hibr, who had submitted his resignations several times, had recently protested to the ruling council about the decisions of the Empowerment Removal Committee, which aims to retrieve the assets of the former regime, to sack several prosecutors accused of being close to the former regime.

He said the decision to dismiss them had been made without consulting him.

It is not clear why the chief justice was removed but it had been criticised for delaying several important reforms, Sudan Tribune note.
