SUDAN INSIGHT ALERT: Sudan Tribune - The Perils of Managing Transition: Will Sudanese Kandakas be the the option?

21/5/19: Sudan Tribune- The Perils of Managing Transition: Will Sudanese Kandakas be the option?, by Luka Kuol

Luka Kuol, a Global Fellow at the Peace Research Institute of Oslo, calls for female leadership of Sudan during the transitional period.

Kuol draws on empirical evidence to highlight the positive role women can play in peace process leadership and peacebuilding. Kuol also looks to the historical leadership roles Sudanese women have held, and the roles they’ve played in the recent protests. He also cites the oppression women have faced under the Bashir regime as a key driver for them being at the forefront of the recent protest movement.

Nonetheless, Kuol states that the success of the transitionary period is heavily dependent on the military and their ‘’commitment to a transition that will establish a level playing field for democratic transformation.”
