SUDAN NEWS ALERT: AP - Tribal clashes leave dozens dead in 2 Sudanese provinces

18/1/2020: AP - Tribal clashes leave dozens dead in 2 Sudanese provinces, by Samy Magdy

AP’s report on clashes between “non-Arab” Fallata and Rizeigat tribes in al-Tawil village in Nyala, South Darfur cites local media sources that state the violence left at least 60 dead and 40 wounded. The violence was reportedly sparked by the killing of a shepherd, he said.

Mohammed Osman, a Sudan researcher at Human Rights Watch, said the tribal violence in Darfur is an example of why many displaced people protested the end of the UN-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID)

“As UNITAMS now is in charge, the (UN Security Council) and international community should make sure that the new mission is well positioned to fully discharge its mandate, in particular on protection of civilians, monitoring and reporting on human rights abuses,” he said.
