SUDAN INSIGHT ALERT: Atlantic Council – Sudan’s prime minister comes to Washington

2/12/2019: Atlantic Council – Sudan’s prime minister comes to Washington, by Cameron Hudson

Cameron Hudson, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Africa Center, suggests ways for Prime Minister Hamdok to align US-Sudanese interests.

To enable Sudanese security sector reforms, Hudson suggests that Hamdok request support from US intelligence services in reorganising Sudan’s intelligence services, and for US military assistance and intelligence sharing to allow the US to relay its expectations to the Sudanese military.

Hudson calls for Hamdok to request support from the US State Department’s Office of Global Criminal Justice in establishing a peace process that affirms Sudan’s sense of national unity, with Hamdok also needing to ratify Sudanese human rights conventions against torture and gendered discrimination, and welcoming global human rights bodies into Sudan.

Finally, Hudson calls for Hamdok to request US support in gaining the political victories needed to mitigate against unpopular economic reforms, and for Sudan’s 2020 budget to shed light on how military-run industries will be regulated.
